Malia Obama set to make directorial debut with short film

Washington, April 5: Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, is making her directorial debut with a short film that is scheduled to release under Donald Glover’s new production company Gilga.

Malia, 22, recently graduated from Harvard University and is now using her directorial skills to create a short film. The film is reportedly a ‘coming of age story’ and will be based on a young girl’s experience with ‘emotional and physical obstacles’ as she navigates her identity.

According to information a US-based media company said that Glover recently revealed Malia’s association with the project and recalled an early conversation between him and Malia. “The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” Glover said. He told her, “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.”

Malia is no stranger to the film industry, they have earlier worked together. The former first daughter is already making her mark on Glover’s Amazon Prime Video series ‘Swarm’, which premiered on March 17. The show was her first major TV writing project, she already managed to impress the industry veterans — namely Glover and his ‘Swarm’ co-creator Janine Nabers.

Malia also collaborated with Nabers to write the pivotal episode “Girl, Bye,” which continues the series’ storyline that centres around a young woman named Dre who is obsessed with a fictional R&B star resembling Beyonce.

“‘Girl, Bye’ is probably one of the wildest episodes,” Nabers said. “I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. It’s pretty dope. I’m really proud of it.”
